Scientists appear to agree on a single most important reason of the appearance of wrinkles on the skin with age and that is from photo damage. Ultra Violet rays from the sun cause thermal damage to our skin over a period of time. Dermatologists also reveal other reasons as well for wrinkled skin like:
- Cigarette smoking
- Age related muscle tone
- Various nutritional deficiencies
- Chemical reactions in our body resulting in the formation of free radicals.
Free radicals are caused by air pollution and other environmental toxins, exercise, smoking, sun exposure and even conditions of normal human metabolism.
Our skin is the first line of defense against invading free radicals and is therefore equipped with several built-in antioxidants. The antioxidants both neutralize the free radicals as well as the harmful effects of the penetrating ultraviolet light from the sun. Recent evidence suggests that our built-in protective system can be enhanced by both ” ingested ” and ” topically applied ” antioxidants.
The best recommended solution from photo damage is “prevention” i.e.;
1. Limit exposure to sun
2. Use a good quality sunscreen throughout the entire life span.
The topically applied antioxidants such as Vitamin E & C, Beta Carotene and Selenium have beneficial effects by immediately supplying these antioxidant protection factors to the upper most layers of the skin.
Orally administered antioxidants in combating photo damage include Vitamins A, C & E. The use of these vitamins with antioxidant properties should be included in one’s diet. Other oral administered antioxidants include selenium, glutathione, aspirin, certain antihistamines, indomethacin and various steroid drugs.
The best recommendation is that everyone should take a broad-spectrum antioxidant supplement two or three times a day for the rest of their lives.
