“Female Athlete Triad” is a disorder that occurs in female athletes. It is characterized by disordered eating and menstrual irregularities which eventually can cause osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which there is decreased bone mass and increased risk of bone fractures. It is common in older females but recently doctors have made a connection between secondary Amenorrhea and Osteoporosis in young adult athletic females.
Poor nutrition combined with strenuous training is the root cause of the Triad. Inadequate nutrition leads to essential nutrients deficiency and poor state of health followed by loss of body weight. This condition triggers menstrual irregularities and if allowed to persist, leads to osteoporosis. Female athletes who are at highest risk include long distance runners, cyclists, swimmers, gymnasts, figure skaters etc.
MEASURES TO PREVENT FEMALE ATHLETE TRIAD
- First and foremost is a sound Performance nutrition program. This means eating the required amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats over 5 to 6 meals per day.
- Taking the right amount of vitamins and minerals especially calcium and magnesium through supplementation.
- Maintaining adequate fluid intake throughout the day.
- Maintaining a training diary that document your athletic life, training logs, health problems, medications, medical exams, sleep patterns, menstrual periods, behavior patterns and training logs.
This blog was specially researched and made simple for our local audience who do not have access to medical help on this important topic. We hope this promotes awareness among female athletes and gym members as their participation in physical activities is increasing.
